broken pieces

Her heart sank... It sank deeper and deeper with every word, every sentence, every message she read. 'How could he do this...', she thought... 'After everything that happened... how?'

She paced across the room, reading line after line, message after message, word after word then she stopped, hands fell to her sides, breathe held, eyes cast down to the floor and her mind flooded. Flooded with words, flooded with thoughts and yet it was flooded with emptiness. Her heart clenched, it twisted and tugged, and yet it just stopped. There was no pounding in her ears nor in her chest, just this gut wrenching feeling that was so painful and yet painless. She was numb...

Her eyes drew clouds as the tears rolled down her cheeks and fell to the floor. Her knees grew weak but she stood standing. Her hands gripped the phone until her knuckles turned white. How was she suppose to react?  What was she suppose to say? After everything, who was she to him anymore? He called her his 'best friend', said he saw her as a 'little sister' but 'best friends' don't do those things. 'Little sisters' don't do those things. So who was she? What was she?

She had no answer. Her body was ice.

"I hope you're happy :)", she replied.
"I'm sorry :/", he said - 'No you aren't'
"I still love you", he claimed - 'You never did'
"You're still my best friend", he added - 'And that's all I'll ever be'
"I'll still be here whenever you wanna talk :/", he offered - 'There's so much to say, so much to tell but there's nothing to talk about... not anymore'

The things she wanted to tell. The words she wanted to say. The profanities she wanted to scream. All the thoughts, all the words and all the emotions, she locked away with the key hanging on her neck.

Now, she walks with a brand and no longer wears her heart on his sleeve.
